New Virtual Developing Mathematical Ideas Institutes!

We have combined the convenience of online learning with the engagement of our face-to-face institutes to create a powerfully dynamic professional development experience.

This summer we will pilot two virtual DMI institutes. Virtual attendees will join our on-campus colleagues in realtime. Our 360 degree camera will capture the flow of the sessions and allow you to join the discussions and participate in the math activities as if you were there in person.

Space is limited so contact us soon to enroll.

Cost to attend: Free
Course materials: Participants need the casebook that corresponds to the the institute in which they enroll ($30-$40) and have access to cubes and/or base-ten blocks.
Graduate Credit Option Available: Participants can elect to take the course for 2 graduate credits from Mount Holyoke College

Week 1: July 14 – 18
Building a System of Tens

Participants explore the base-ten structure of the number system, consider how that structure is exploited in multi-digit computational procedures, and examine how basic concepts of whole numbers reappear when working with decimals. (New 2014 edition incorporating the CCSSM)

Instructor: Mike Flynn

Schedule:

Monday-Thursday from 8:30 – 4:30 EST and Friday from 8:30 – 12:00 EST

8:30 – 11:30 (morning session online with 15 minute break built in)

11:30 – 1:30 (lunch break and reading time)

1:30 – 4:30 (afternoon session online with 15 minute break built in)

Week 2: July 21 – 25
Making Meaning for Operations

Participants examine the actions and situations modeled by the four basic operations. The seminar begins with a view of young children’s counting strategies as they encounter word problems, moves to an examination of the four basic operations on whole numbers, and revisits the operations in the context of rational numbers.
